Derrick is the second born of 3 children in his family.  He has 1 brother and 1 sister.  His parents separated when Derrick was still at a tender age and his father moved on taking Derrick’s brother with him.  Derrick and his sister remained with their poor mother who grows a few crops like corn and beans on a small rented piece of land.  She shares the harvest with the owner of the land and the little that she is left with is used as food at home.  Derrick’s mom tries to take care of the children with the few resources she can lay her hands on and she finds most difficulty in paying for the children’s tuition.  Supporting Derrick’s education will make his future brighter.
